Francesco Messina Pyrite Cabinet Wood, metal and marble Date of creation: 2025 H120 W175 D70 cm Derived from the Greek ‘pyr’, meaning fire, and used to produce sparks and ignite when struck against a stone or metal, pyrite is the inspiration behind this piece of furniture. Also known as ‘fool’s gold’, this mineral takes the form of a cuboid crystalline structure. It is represented in the piece by an assembly of multiple cubic containers of varying volumes and sizes, meeting at unusual angles, bringing this crystalline inspiration to life. The piece takes the form of a majestic ornamental sculpture, half-mineral, half-abstract, much like fool’s gold. The irregular, stony plinth perfectly supports the cubist ensemble, topped by the pyrite structure. The piece’s openings are concealed to create an element of surprise.
