An iconic Jansky chair, designed by the Czech architect and designer Bořek Šípek for the Italian manufacturer Driade in 1986. The chair combines a tubular steel frame painted purple with a seat, front legs and backrest made from carved wood. Its most striking feature is its expressive backrest, which ends in two hand-carved finials with organic shapes. These playful details contrast with the rational geometry of the metal frame and give the chair its unmistakable postmodernist character. Bořek Šípek (1949–2016) was a Czech architect and designer renowned for his imaginative and often neo-baroque approach to furniture, glass and architecture. After founding his studio in Amsterdam in 1983, he collaborated with major international manufacturers, notably Driade and Vitra. From 1992 onwards, he also served as architect to Prague Castle during the presidency of Václav Havel. A sculptural and highly characteristic example of Bořek Šípek’s postmodernist furniture design.
