Description
De Stijl Rug Wool Date of creation: 1930 H 113 × W 78 cm Tears along one edge, slight restoration. Wool carpet. In the De Stijl style, circa 1930. H 113 × W 78 cm. Slight tears along one edge, discreet restoration. This rug, in the style of the De Stijl movement (Dutch, active from 1917 to 1931), adopts the formal vocabulary of this revolutionary movement: absolute geometry, primary colours, horizontal and vertical lines. De Stijl — whose best-known figures include Theo van Doesburg, Piet Mondrian and Gerrit Rietveld — exerted a considerable influence on 20th-century design, architecture, painting and the applied arts as a whole. A carpet in the De Stijl style is a rare object of exceptional historical and decorative value.
