Superb preservation of the glaze. Minor wear consistent with its age. An exceptional French Art Deco stoneware vase, signed by Gilbert Méténier, with an elegant globular shape, a cylindrical neck and two attached circular handles. The body is enhanced by a magnificent combination of crystalline glazes in deep cobalt blue, turquoise green and ivory, set against a pale beige-pink background, creating the famous ‘Bleu de Gannat’ effect for which the Gannat workshop is renowned. The harmony of the proportions and the remarkable lustre of the glaze bear witness to the originality of Gilbert Méténier’s work, blending Art Nouveau influences with the emerging modernity of the Art Deco movement. The workshop, founded by Louis Méténier and taken over by Gilbert after 1920, gained an international reputation for its highly distinctive stoneware creations and experimental glazes, which were sold in prestigious Parisian department stores and exported worldwide. The destruction of the original moulds in 1940 ensures the rarity and authenticity of the surviving pieces.
