Description
Gilbert Méténier (1876–1957) Art Deco sculptural ewer Stoneware with ‘Bleu de Gannat’ crystalline glaze Signed on the base Date of creation: c. 1925–1935 H22 cm Condition: Very good overall condition, with no visible restoration. Slight signs of wear consistent with its age. Superb preservation of the glaze. An exceptional and highly decorative French Art Deco stoneware ewer by Gilbert Méténier, with an elegant pear-shaped form, featuring a long, stylised spout and an openwork handle. The body is covered in a remarkable, flowing crystalline glaze, with shades of deep cobalt blue and midnight blue, spreading across a cream background and creating the famous ‘Bleu de Gannat’ effect for which the Méténier workshop is renowned. The elongated neck and organic silhouette evoke both Art Nouveau naturalism and the refined aesthetics of Art Deco. The iridescent effects of the glaze and the fluid enamel are characteristic of the finest pieces produced by the Méténier pottery in Gannat, where each piece was finished and fired individually. The famous ‘Bleu de Gannat’ enamel, developed by Gilbert Méténier, is one of the most sought-after finishes produced by the workshop between 1920 and 1940.
