This piece comes from an original series of six armchairs produced in 1989. Only two examples from this production are currently known to exist, making this piece an exceptional testament to collectible design, experimental design and the German avant-garde of the late 20th century. Crafted from black lacquered tubular steel and woven cane, the Kangaroo Chair exemplifies the dialogue between architectural construction, craftsmanship and formal innovation that characterises Wolfgang Laubersheimer’s work. The continuous structure of bent steel, combined with the lightness of the wickerwork, gives this chair a presence that is both sculptural and functional, emblematic of Postmodern Design, German Design and European Collectible Design. As founder of the Pentagon Gruppe, Wolfgang Laubersheimer stands alongside Ron Arad, Martin Szekely, Jasper Morrison, Shiro Kuramata and the Memphis Milano movement as one of the designers who redefined contemporary furniture in the 1980s. His work was notably celebrated during the retrospective dedicated to the Pentagon Gruppe at the MAKK – Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln, confirming his significance in the history of contemporary design, avant-garde furniture and German design.
