Description
NORWAY, 18th–19th CENTURY Daybed Carved and turned wood Upholstery and leather restored, late 19th – early 20th century. H80 L210 D83 cm Beautiful patina from use. Wear, marks, scratches and variations in the colour of the leather; signs of use, minor imperfections and previous restoration work to the frame, consistent with the piece’s age. A substantial daybed in carved and turned wood, resting on a rectangular frame with four turned posts joined by low crossbars. These feature a repeating carved decoration of stylised scale or leaf motifs. The sides are punctuated by a succession of slender turned balusters. The base, designed as an openwork gallery, echoes this same baluster motif between two powerfully turned and carved posts. The piece retains a beautiful antique patina that bears witness to its use. The seat and backrest are upholstered and covered in patinated brown leather, held in place by a row of upholstery tacks. The upholstery and leather were likely reupholstered in the late 19th or early 20th century. There are old metal reinforcing elements beneath the seat.
