Description
Ivory Coast, 20th century Attié statue Wood, pigments H75 cm A slender statue depicting a standing figure with a very elongated body, whose torso and neck are entirely adorned with bands of relief and incised motifs evoking the body scarification characteristic of certain sculptures from the lagoon-dwelling peoples of Côte d’Ivoire. The head, which is large in proportion to the body, is surmounted by a headdress consisting of two tall sections framing a face with fine features and an elongated profile. The short arms are positioned on either side of the torso; the short legs rest on a blackened rectangular plinth. Sculptures attributed to the Attié, or Akyé, of the lagoon region of eastern Côte d’Ivoire frequently feature highly stylised bodies, elongated and ringed necks, as well as scarifications rendered through relief carving, wooden studs or geometric motifs. These anthropomorphic figures were notably associated with ritual practices and the worship of spirits and ancestors. Their iconography bears many similarities to the sculptural traditions of other Ivorian lagoon-dwelling peoples.
