Description
Nigeria, early 20th century Statue of a Yoruba dignitary Wood, pigments H 36 cm A seated male figure, rendered in a faceted and vigorous style, displaying several stylistic features reminiscent of Yoruba sculpture from the Osi-Ilorin region in the north of the Ekiti area. The face, constructed from broad planes, features deeply set almond-shaped eyes, a slightly parted mouth and a hairstyle forming a high, fan-shaped crest with parallel striations. The figure sits on a circular base and holds in his hand a staff or an insignia with a spherical pommel. The treatment of the face, and in particular the eyes, is reminiscent of certain works by the circle of great sculptors from Osi-Ilorin, including Bamgboshe and Areogun. Areogun of Osi-Ilorin (c. 1880–1954) was one of the great Yoruba sculptors of the first half of the 20th century and was trained by Bamgboshe, who died around 1920. This sculpture can be linked to this stylistic tradition, although a definitive attribution to Areogun cannot be made on stylistic grounds alone.
