Description
Rupert Spira (born 1960) Large lidded bowl Stoneware with oxblood glaze, in shades of coppery red and purple. RS stamp Circa 1990 D56.5 cm A British ceramicist, Rupert Spira trained under Henry Hammond at West Surrey College of Art and Design, then under Michael Cardew at Wenford Bridge between 1980 and 1982. Rooted in the tradition of British studio pottery, his work combines precision of form with experimentation with glazes. His later works also include pieces bearing poetic inscriptions. The understated profile of this piece highlights the variations in the glaze, whilst its generous diameter lends it a sculptural presence.
