Description
Angelo Lelli (1911–1979) Calla Floor lamp Brass and lacquered sheet metal Produced by Arredoluce, Monza, Italy Date of creation: 1952 H230 W60 cm One of the most poetic and sculptural lighting designs of post-war Italian modernism, the Calla lamp perfectly illustrates Angelo Lelli’s extraordinary ability to combine technical innovation with organic elegance. Inspired by a bouquet of arum lilies, the composition features multiple slender brass stems rising naturally from a sculptural base; each supports a delicately shaped lacquered metal shade, evoking the flower’s characteristic bloom. Crafted from patinated brass with white lacquered steel shades, the lamp transforms light into an architectural composition, creating a striking interplay of rhythms, movements and shadows. The asymmetrical arrangement of the stems gives each piece the appearance of a living botanical sculpture, whilst showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship for which Arredoluce is internationally renowned. Founded by Angelo Lelli in Monza in 1947, Arredoluce has established itself as one of the most influential lighting manufacturers of the 20th century, collaborating with designers such as Gio Ponti, Ettore Sottsass, Joe Colombo, Vico Magistretti and Nanda Vigo. Today, Lelli’s creations are regarded as some of the finest examples of Italian lighting design and feature in major museum and private collections around the world. The Calla floor lamp remains one of the designer’s most sought-after and rarest models, combining a sculptural presence with exceptional lighting quality. The large models with multiple light sources are particularly sought after by collectors of modern Italian design, ‘Mid-Century Modern’ style and collectable lighting.
