Description
Yoruba people, Nigeria Ibeji statuette (male) Wood with a brown patina, brass ring 20th century H 35 cm A monoxyl anthropomorphic statuette depicting a male twin (Ibeji), shown standing. The conical, finely striated hairstyle evokes the characteristic crest found in certain Yoruba workshops. The face, stomach, legs and back are adorned with fine, incised ritual scarifications. The figure, depicted nude with the genitals exposed, wears a remarkable pectoral ornament, as well as bracelets on each bicep and on the left wrist. The feet are shod in a pair of delicately carved sandals. Beautiful patina, evidence of ritual use.
