Willie Landels (1928–2023) Throw-Away 1 three-seater sofa and 1 armchair White vinyl upholstery, loose seat cushions Designed in 1965, produced by Zanotta, Italy from 1966 ‘Zanotta Made in Italy’ manufacturer’s label beneath one of the pieces; moulded Zanotta emblem visible in a close-up Sofa: H57 W207 D76 cm, seat height 35 cm Armchair: H57 W96 D76 cm, seat height 35 cm Willie Landels designed ‘Throw-Away’ in 1965. Aurelio Zanotta discovered the design at his home in London and put it into production in 1966. The model marks a milestone in the history of upholstered seating: the polyurethane foam blocks themselves form the structure, without the need for a supporting wooden or metal frame. Its supple, informal shape foreshadowed several trends in Italian design of the late 1960s
