Tolozan
Lounge chair, polystyrene sheet, polyurethane foam, beech veneer
Tubular steel
For Ligne Roset, France, 2002
H85 W76 D138 cm
Steel tube frame, welded steel mesh and thermoformed polystyrene (PS) sheet, base in solid drawn stainless steel with a brushed finish, polyethylene (PE) glides, polyurethane (PU) foam seat, footrest in beech veneer plywood.
85 x 76 x 138 cm
This chaise longue, featuring an asymmetrical armrest, is the result of a interplay of contrasts between materials (stainless steel, wool and oak veneer), contours and volumes (the curves of the seat, backrest, armrest, footrest and base). A coherent, uncompromising style, blending the graphic rigour of the form with a discreet sensuality.
1980s: trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Saint-Étienne, then at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. He worked for Luigi Colani in 1987.
1990s: solo exhibition at the Fondation Cartier in 1991; collaboration with Philippe Starck on the Thomson project in 1993; followed by a carte blanche from VIA in 1995.
Since 2002: he has been designing for Ligne Roset and Cinna, notably the Tolozan chaise longue and the Snowdonia sofa, which won a Red Dot Design Award in 2004.
At the same time: he taught in Reims, at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, in Saint-Étienne and then at Camondo. He took over as director of the École supérieure d’art et design de Saint-Étienne in 2020.
Today: he is the chief executive of the Cité du design–Ésad Saint-Étienne, a position he has held since January 2024.
