Knobkierrie wooden club. South Africa. A single-piece weapon consisting of a short handle tapering into a spherical head. The point where the blunt head meets the handle is offset, giving the weapon a harmonious asymmetry. Used for close combat as well as for throwing when necessary, this war club – characteristic of the Bantu peoples of Southern Africa – secured victories for the Zulus. The Zulus called this weapon ‘Iwisa’. Nguni/Zulu peoples, Southern Africa. Shows signs of wear, in excellent condition. Late 19th to early 20th century. Length: 46 cm – Width at widest point: 6 cm.
