Description
Sacred art. Mihai Pop SIGHETEANU (born 1948), Romania. Mounted under glass, depicting Saint George on horseback, dressed in traditional Romanian attire, holding a trident and slaying the dragon. Signed and dated 1980. 27.5 x 22.5 cm (visible area). A retrospective exhibition of Sigheteanu’s works was organised in 2020 in Romania by the ‘Petre Dulfu’ County Library in Baia Mare. Sigheteanu’s career was multifaceted. He learnt the art of icon painting from Gheorghe Teodorescu Romana?i (1891–1980) and Iosif Keber (1897–1989), before being granted the title of icon painter by the Metropolitan of Cluj. He produced numerous icons on glass and undertook short study visits to Germany (FRG) between 1983 and 1985, before emigrating there in 1986.
