Description
An unfortunately incomplete series of portraits of the dukes and duchesses of the House of Lorraine, engraved from the Saint-Urbain medal collection by ‘the most skilful masters of Florence’, with an extract from Dom Calmet’s treatise. 1762. 56 folios. Enclosed are two portraits taken from the same work (Charles I and François III) but from a different copy (formerly in the L’Escale collection – Meuse). Also enclosed is an engraving taken from Dom Calmet’s writings depicting, in particular, Gérard of Alsace (“The Return of the Crusader” – a statue now housed at the Musée Lorrain in Nancy), and a genealogy of the 16 quarters of Louis-Joseph (1781–1789), Dauphin of France.
