Description
ROME, after Matteo Gregorio DE ROSSI (1638–1702), printed by Carlo LOSI, 1773. A combination of two engravings depicting the ancient Egyptian obelisks in Rome. 76 x 55 cm. Minor damage, soiling. The first engraving depicts the five ancient obelisks dedicated to the worship of the True Cross, with their heights indicated (“Disegno delle cinque guglie principali che si vedono in Roma alzate in onore della S. Croce con le giuste misure di ciascuna”). From left to right, one can recognise the Flaminio Obelisk in Piazza del Popolo, the Esquiline Obelisk near Santa Maria Maggiore, the Obelisk in Piazza della Minerva, perched on an elephant sculpted by Bernini, the Vatican Obelisk in St Peter’s Square, and the Lateran Obelisk. With the exception of the one at the Piazza della Minerva, all these obelisks were repositioned on the orders of Sixtus V, with the aim of exalting the Faith. The second engraving depicts five further obelisks, two of which lie on the ground, with their dimensions (“Disegno di cinque altre guglie che si vedono in Roma cioe tre minori alzate e dui prostrate in terra con le sue giuste misure di ciascuna”).
