Born in Dresden in 1911, he studied painting and graphic design at the Dresden Academy and German language and literature at the Technical University in 1930; he then studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts under Emil Orlik and Hans Meid from 1931 to 1933, where he met Max Slevogt. In 1933, he accepted Hesse’s invitation to Montagnola in Ticino, lived at Casa Camuzzi and illustrated Hesse’s *Hermann Lauscher* as well as over 500 books; in 1945, he married the tapestry weaver Ursula Bächler. His travels took him to Italy (Ospedaletti with Hans Purrmann in 1949, Ischia with Werner Gilles in 1950, Venice), Paris (Raoul Dufy in 1952) and Rome, where he cultivated contacts with contemporary artists. From 1960 to 1976, he taught as a professor of graphic art and illustration at the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts and influenced artists such as Uta Iber; his body of work comprises thousands of drawings, watercolours and portraits in a realistic style, comparable to that of Otto Dix and Josef Hegenbarth.
