He trained in the fine arts from 1945 to 1951 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Andersen and Gütersloh. Brauer initially earned a living as a singer, which enabled him to finance his study trips to Europe and the Near East. It was not until 1960 that painting became his main focus. However, he remained a key figure in the Viennese song tradition until the end of his life, recording several successful albums and making numerous television appearances as a musician, including alongside his daughter Timna Brauer and Heinz Holecek. Together with his friends from the Art Club, Brauer founded the ‘Vienna School of Fantastic Realism’. Following the ‘Phantasten’ group exhibition at the Austrian Gallery in 1959, the group began to gain international recognition. Brauer, who had been working in Vienna and Israel since 1964, received numerous national and international commissions. In 1986 he was appointed to the Vienna Academy, where he worked as a professor until 1997. A defining feature of Brauer’s artistic work is his detailed, layered painting style, which incorporates current political events into images with a dreamlike and fairy-tale atmosphere.
