The German-Austrian artist (Austrian from 1947) Herbert Breiter registered for the entrance examination at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts in 1944, but was conscripted into the Wehrmacht. After the war, the self-taught artist made ends meet through commissions for arts and crafts in Salzburg. Breiter was a private pupil of Max Peiffer Watenphul. The painter Agnes Muthspiel, whom he met through Peiffer Watenphul, became his partner; Breiter became friends with Gottfried von Einem and the set designer Caspar Neher. He was active in exhibiting his work and travelling. In Italy and Greece, he produced landscape paintings in watercolour and oil, as well as extensive series of lithographs. One of his students was Eliette von Karajan. Breiter was a member of the artists’ group ‘Salzburger Gruppe’ and the Salzburger Kunstverein. In 1961, the art historian Hans Vollmer described his still lifes as “in the style of 17th-century Dutch artists” (Willem van Aelst, Jan Asselijn, Gerrit A.
