Born in Hopfgarten im Brixental in 1927, he completed an apprenticeship as a church and decorative painter with Toni Kirchmayr in Innsbruck before moving to Vienna with Ludwig Neuhauser in 1947 and studying at the Academy of Fine Arts under Sergius Pauser and Herbert Boeckl. He graduated in 1952 with a diploma and a master class prize. Working as a freelance artist in Vienna from 1952 onwards, he initially supported himself by copying old masters, became a member of the Künstlerhaus (serving as vice-president from the 1970s) and travelled throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and the USA.
