Adolf Büger* (Munich 1885 – 1966 Munich) Inspiration, 1955 oil on wood, 70 x 62 cm signed AW. Büger on the reverse: a painted-over sketch of a female figure, signed and dated ‘Büger 55’, label: ‘Inspiration Adolf Büger München St. Annaplatz 10’ ESTIMATE €250 – €400 STARTING PRICE €250 Adolf Büger was a German artist. Büger studied at the Academy in Munich under Peter Halm and Angelo Jank. At a young age, he was able to exhibit his works in important galleries such as Tannhauser, Brackl, Weinmüller-Munich, the Glaspalast in Munich and Moller in Berlin. In 1930, he exhibited his work alongside that of Erich Heckel and Max Pechstein at an art exhibition of South German painters in New York. From 1933, his work was deemed ‘entartet’ (degenerate), and Büger withdrew to Bad Reichenhall. During the war years, many of his works were lost in Munich. After the Second World War, he joined Willy Baumeister, Ida Kerkovius and Max Ackermann in the ‘Roter Reiter’ (Red Rider) group in Traunstein. In 1952, he returned to Munich and exhibited regularly at shows organised by the Neue Münchner Künstlergenossenschaft (New Munich Artists’ Cooperative) until his death in 1966.
