Contemporary Austrian painter and graphic artist. Born in Stockholm in 1957, he has lived in Kiel since 1961, where he studied graphic design at the University of Applied Sciences under Fritz Bauer from 1978 to 1984 and took part in state and local exhibitions from 1980 onwards. In 1987, he was awarded a Rome scholarship by the state of Schleswig-Holstein, became guild master of the Innviertler Künstlergilde in 1989, and took on teaching posts at the Muthesius Kunsthochschule Kiel from 1991 to 1992. Numerous solo exhibitions followed, including in Kiel, Lübeck, Berlin, Miami and Barcelona. Defant is known for his expressive, often figurative paintings featuring surreal-looking pictorial spaces, striking colour contrasts and narrative cycles such as the ‘Don Juan’ cycle, which oscillate between reality and imagination.
