Austrian painter and graphic artist of the 20th century. Born in Bregenz in 1930, he studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna under Franz Herberth and Ceno Kosak from 1949 to 1954, where he specialised in printmaking. From 1953 to 1956, he was an assistant and later worked at Schrollpresse and Edition Tusch with Kristian Sotriffer. From the 1950s onwards, he created series on themes such as Venice, European landscapes, *Pierrot Lunaire* and literature (Vulpius, Morgenstern, Kafka), exhibiting in Vienna and internationally. Donin developed a symbolic visual world featuring mythical figures, gods and archetypal scenes in etchings, lithographs and paintings; his work has been compared to that of Gustave Moreau and was influenced by Picasso and Chagall; his mastery of printmaking reveals ironic, melancholic narratives.
