Paul Eliasberg* (Munich 1907 – 1983 Hamburg) Set of 3 views of cathedrals etching on paper, c. 35 x 25 cm signed Eliasberg; 2 of them numbered 5/80 ESTIMATE °€ 100 – € 150 STARTING PRICE °€ 100 German painter and graphic artist of the 20th century. Born in Munich in 1907, the son of the translator Alexander Eliasberg, he studied commercial art in Berlin from 1924 to 1925 and in Paris from 1926 to 1930 under Roger Bissière at the Académie Ranson. After his family were expelled in 1923 and he served in the Resistance in southern France during the war, he obtained French citizenship in 1947, lived in Paris and travelled to Israel, Spain and Greece. Working as a freelancer from 1958 onwards, Eliasberg produced fine etchings, watercolours and drawings depicting abstract landscapes and architectural visions; from 1966 to 1970 he was a lecturer at the Städelschule in Frankfurt, and held exhibitions in Bremen, Hanover and at documenta 6 (1977).
