Lisl Cech’s father was Karl Cech, a doctor in Mödling. She attended the girls’ grammar school on Eisentorgasse. She had shown an artistic inclination from an early age; she was influenced artistically by Robin Christian Andersen, whose studio she joined as the youngest student at the age of 14; it was here that she made her first attempts at still life and life drawing. Cech attended the Vienna School of Applied Arts and subsequently the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Throughout her life, she remained connected to Andersen’s concept of depicting nature in an orderly, sometimes arranged structure, which was based on Paul Cézanne’s late work. In 1935, Cech held her first exhibition of ten works at the Vienna Secession. In 1939, she married the architect Erich Engels and moved with him from Vienna to Bad Gastein. From 1942 to 1944, Lisl Engels worked closely with Franz Wiegele within the Nötscher Circle. She also met the painters Herbert Boeckl, Anton Kolig and Oskar Kokoschka. The latter had a considerable artistic influence on her. In 1946, Engels moved to Salzburg, where she organised a wide range of exhibitions. From 1974, Engels lived with her family in Thalgauegg. Her works are held in the collections of the Salzburg provincial government and the Austrian National Bank, amongst others. In 2003, the Salzburg Museum Carolino Augusteum staged a special exhibition of Engels’ paintings.
