German painter and graphic artist of the 20th century. Born in Dresden in 1897 as Conrad Felix Müller (later Felixmüller), he studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts under Carl Bantzer from 1912 to 1914 and became a master student; in 1919, he founded the Dresden Secession Group 1919 with Otto Dix. In 1920, he was awarded the Saxon State Prize (Rome Prize), travelled to the Ruhr region and turned to New Objectivity from 1924 onwards. Branded as ‘degenerate’ in 1933, he moved to Berlin in 1934. Felixmüller created Expressionist portraits, images of workers and woodcuts featuring large eyes and a socially critical perspective; later, he produced more realistic family and landscape motifs. He was a professor in Halle from 1949 to 1961 and died in Berlin-Zehlendorf in 1977.
