Karl Anton Fleck* (Vienna 1928 – 1983 Vienna) Landscape lithograph on paper, 50 x 65.5 cm signed Fleck, numbered 34/50 ESTIMATE °€ 60 – € 100 STARTING PRICE °€ 60 Austrian painter of the 20th century. Born in Vienna in 1928, he began his career as a watercolourist painting landscapes and later experimented with informal and tachist forms; In 1955, he held his first exhibition at the Helsingborg Art Museum, followed in 1961 by an exhibition of abstract works at the Zum roten Apfel gallery, where he met Richard Pechoc and Walter Malli and founded the Ahmad Pechoc Trio. His style evolved into striking outline drawings featuring distortions, symbols and dynamic clusters of lines, often created whilst under the influence of alcohol; he held an exhibition at the Vienna Art Fair in 1977 and a retrospective at the Museum of the 20th Century in 1978. Fleck addressed themes of consumerism, environmental destruction, questions of identity and self-portraits (‘Selbstbefleckungen’ or ‘self-stains’) featuring anthropomorphic hybrids of humans and animals, nudes and surreal texts on H.C. Artmann; he died in Vienna in 1983. Other artists and styles: Richard Pechoc, Walter Malli, H.C.
