German painter, graphic artist and photographer. Born in 1937 in Rastenburg (Kętrzyn, East Prussia), he studied painting, graphic art and photography at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg from 1957 to 1962; freelance since 1962; recipient of the Darmstadt Sponsorship Award in 1967 and the Arthur Grimme Prize for Graphic Art in 1992; has lived in the Neckar Valley near Eberbach since 1971. Garstka paints on the border between figuration and abstraction, using informal structures in acrylic, oil and watercolour; Over 50 solo exhibitions since 1958; works held in collections such as the Albertina.
