Gottfried Goebel was an Austrian painter and graphic artist. He was born in Vienna in 1906 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under Rudolf Jettmar, where he met his life partner, Greta Freist. Their shared studio in Vienna became a meeting place for prominent artists and writers such as Elias Canetti, Otto Basil and Albert Paris Gütersloh. Goebel exhibited his work at the Hagenbund and was a member of the artists’ association ‘Der Kreis’ (The Circle). In 1936, Goebel moved with Freist to Paris, where he exhibited his work at the Salon d’Automne in 1937 and founded the French section of the International Art Club in 1950. At the start of the Second World War, he was interned and arrested by the Gestapo in 1944. After the war, he turned to neo-expressionist abstraction, influenced by Picasso, and from 1948 onwards created the *Fond Blanc* series as well as geometric and tachist works. In the 1950s, he experimented with relief painting and tubes, and later with mixed-media works, ceramics, plastics and wooden sculptures. His work *Premonition of the War* (1939) is regarded as a precursor to the Leipzig School. Gottfried Goebel died in Paris in 1975.
