Karl Heinz Hansen-Bahia* (Hamburg 1915 – 1978 São Paulo) São Paulo, 1954 linocut on paper, 44 x 34.5 cm inscribed and signed ‘To you, in memory of São Paulo, your Karl-Heinz Hansen’, dated 15 September ESTIMATE €200 – €400 STARTING PRICE €200 German painter, graphic artist and woodcut artist of the Expressionist movement. Born on 19 April 1915 in Hamburg as Karl-Heinz Hansen, he learnt the craft of painting from 1930 to 1933, served in the Imperial German Navy from 1935 to 1936 and as a soldier until 1945, and studied independently under Paul Borchers and Fritz Schirrmacher; emigrated to Brazil in 1949, changed his name to Hansen-Bahia in 1966, became a professor of graphic art at the Federal University of Salvador da Bahia (from 1967), and taught in Ethiopia (1963–1966) and Colombia. From 1946 onwards, Hansen-Bahia created monumental woodcut series such as ‘Totentanz’ (1946) and ‘Christus und Thomas’ (1947), religious and socially critical cycles featuring expressive, archaic forms, murals in Bahia and book illustrations; influenced by Brazil with tropical motifs and ancient themes (e.g. the ‘Odysseus’ series).
