Carl Christoph Hartig was a Swiss-German painter, born in Davos in 1888 and died in Düsseldorf in 1975. He studied at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Art and worked primarily as a painter of figures, landscapes and still lifes. His works often feature decoratively arranged, vibrantly coloured compositions with broad brushstrokes and a sure sense of atmosphere and pictorial balance. Auction descriptions include motifs such as bathers, landscapes, lake views and Italian scenes, for example of Lake Como or the Amalfi Coast. Hartig thus belongs to the circle of academically influenced German painting of the first half of the 20th century, which combines representational motifs with painterly freedom.
