Born in Chernivtsi, Bukovina, he studied from 1926 to 1931 at the Academy of Fine Arts under Ferdinand Andri and Karl Fahringer. In 1946, he co-founded the artists’ group Der Kreis, and from 1958 was a member of the Vienna Secession. His works from the interwar period are stylistically linked to Expressionism, showing the influence of Richard Gerstl and Edvard Munch. From the 1940s, he turned to representational abstraction and later to the influences of Cubism and Surrealism, within the circle of Edgar Jené. He painted mainly portraits, landscapes and still lifes. Influenced by Paul Cézanne, his later work explored Tachism. In 1979, he held an exhibition at the Austrian Gallery Belvedere.
