Born on 13 May 1938 in Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland) as Karl-Georg Hirsch, he trained as a plasterer in Leipzig from 1952 to 1960 and studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig (HGB) under Gerhard Kurt Müller from 1960 to 1965. Freelance from 1965 to 1967; assistant from 1967 to 1970, during which time he managed the woodcut workshop; lecturer from 1976; professor from 1989; vice-rector from 1990 to 1997; and tutor to master’s students such as Grit Anton and Stefan Knechtel.
