Austrian painter, draughtsman and graphic artist of the second half of the 20th century. Rudolf Hradil was born in Salzburg in 1925, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and supplemented his education with study and work placements in France, Italy, England and the USA; from the 1950s onwards, he worked as a freelance artist and lived in Vienna until his death in 2007. Hradil is best known for his atmospheric cityscapes, landscapes and interiors, which oscillate between loose representationalism and expressive, often watercolour-like colourfulness. Typical features include sketchy lines, transparent layers of colour and a sensitive capture of the play of light, often in watercolour, gouache, drawing and printmaking. Further artists and styles: Austrian post-war painting, watercolour painting, graphic art, travel sketches, the Vienna School, views of Paris, motifs from Venice and Rome, artists such as Alfred Hrdlicka, Max Weiler and Robin Christian Andersen
