He initially studied architecture in Berlin before turning to painting. In the 1930s, he developed his artistic style, which was initially figurative but increasingly moved towards abstraction. After the Second World War, Jaenisch became one of the most important figures in abstract art in Germany. His works are characterised by a lyrical abstraction, often marked by flowing forms and a harmonious colour palette. He experimented with various techniques and materials, including oil painting, watercolour and collage. Jaenisch was a member of the artist group ‘Zen 49’ and the German Artists’ Association. From 1951 to 1972, he taught at the Berlin University of the Arts and had a major influence on subsequent generations of artists.
