Edgar Jené was a German-French artist. Between 1922 and 1924, Jené studied at the Academy in Munich and then in Paris. There he was introduced to the Surrealists associated with André Breton. He travelled to Italy and Switzerland before moving to Austria in 1935 as a ‘degenerate’ artist, where he lived until 1950. Jené was the founder of a surrealist movement in post-war Vienna, which laid the foundations for the art of the ‘fantastic realists’. In his studio, they received first-hand insights into the paintings of the Surrealists and gained crucial inspiration, even though they later went their separate ways. Jené was a close friend of the poet Paul Celan. In 1950, Jené moved back to France, where he died in 1984.
