Bernhard Henry Louis Klein (Hamburg 1888 – 1967 Berlin-Steglitz) was a German graphic artist, painter, stage designer and animator associated with classical modernism. The son of the carpenter Carl August Heinrich Klein and brother of the painter César Klein, he completed a commercial apprenticeship from 1904 to 1908, studied at the Hamburg State School of Applied Arts under Carl Otto Czeschka from 1908 to 1912, travelled to Italy in 1912, and from 1913 worked as a commercial artist for Lucian Bernhard. In 1918, he was a founding member of the November Group, taught at the Reimann School in Berlin (1922–23), and worked as a stage designer in Königsberg (1924–1928) and at the Berlin Opera (1929–1933). He was banned from working by the Nazis in 1937, made animated films (“Poor Hansi”, 1943), and after 1945 was a professor at the Master School for Arts and Crafts in Berlin. Klein created Expressionist harbour and cityscapes, still lifes, figure paintings (oil, watercolour, woodcut), as well as book illustrations (‘Orplid series’, ‘Die Schöne Rarität’) and stage designs (‘Rienzi’); characterised by clear lines, strong contrasts and dynamic compositions in the transition from Art Nouveau to Modernism.
