Rudolf Kortokraks was a German painter whose work is rooted in the late Expressionist tradition. Born in Ludwigshafen am Rhein in 1928, he attended art school in Graz in 1941 and, from 1949 onwards, spent several years at the Worpswede artists’ colony, where he held his first exhibitions. In 1954, Kortokraks moved to Salzburg and became an assistant to Oskar Kokoschka at the “School of Vision”; he remained its key associate until the end of the school’s initial phase in 1963, and Kokoschka later granted him exclusive rights to use the title “School of Vision”. His body of work encompasses still lifes—particularly floral paintings—landscapes, cityscapes and portraits; these are characterised by a visual language that is both realistic and expressively heightened, earning him a reputation as the “last major representative of late Expressionism”. From the 1960s onwards, Kortokraks lived for periods in London, later in Tuscania (Italy), and finally returned to the Salzburg area, where he established his own “School of Vision” and was honoured with a major exhibition to mark his 80th birthday in 2008.
