Born in Vienna in 1893, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under Rudolf Bacher, took part in exhibitions of the Vienna Secession, and emigrated to New York in the 1930s to escape the Nazis. There, he established himself as a portraitist and exhibited in US galleries and museums from the 1940s onwards. Kronburg painted portraits, cityscapes and nudes with fine linework, subtle watercolour techniques and impressionistic lighting effects, later incorporating Cubist influences. His work was characterised by Viennese elegance and the melancholy of exile.
