The main subject of his paintings was landscapes, which he rendered in a naïve style. A distinctive feature of his pictures is the anti-social character, which can usually be found hidden in some corner of the picture. Kumpf designed the motorway service station in Göttlesbrunn and the thermal baths in Stegersbach, although most of the elements he designed were removed during a renovation in 2004. Together with Thomas Brezina, he wrote a series of picture books. He has also designed several stamps for Austrian Post and the United Nations Postal Administration. The elephant sculpture in front of the Natural History Museum in Vienna, which is very popular with children, was also created by Kumpf. In 2005, he designed bronze sculptures of the twelve signs of the zodiac, which had previously been featured on a series of telephone cards for Austrian Post. Gottfried Kumpf was married to the visual artist and librettist Maria Plachky. From 1968, he lived in Breitenbrunn am Neusiedler See, Burgenland.
