Franz Luby was an Austrian painter and graphic artist associated with Viennese Modernism. Born in St. Pölten in 1902, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Rudolf Bacher. From the 1930s onwards, he took part in exhibitions at the Künstlerhaus and the Vienna Secession, working as a portraitist and landscape painter. He lived and worked primarily in Vienna. Luby created portraits, genre paintings and vedute characterised by nuanced colour, fine brushwork and Impressionist-Expressionist elements, influenced by the Vienna School.
