Born on 18 February 1889 in Berlin, he served an apprenticeship with a stonemason from 1903 to 1907, studied from 1907 to 1910 at the Grand Ducal Saxon Academy of Fine Arts in Weimar under Christian Thomsen (awarded a prize in 1911), worked in Danzig from 1911 to 1914, served in the military from 1914 to 1918, was a professor at the Burg Giebichenstein School of Applied Arts in Halle from 1918 to 1925, co-founded the Free Group Halle with Karl Peter Röhl in 1921, was head of the sculpture class at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin from 1925 to 1930, was dismissed by the Nazis in 1933, went into exile in Ekenforde from 1938, and worked as a freelance artist in Burgbrohl from 1946.
