Oskar Matulla* (Vienna 1900 – 1982 Vienna) Damouchari, 1967 watercolour on paper, 40.5 x 75 cm monogrammed OM, dated 1967 inscribed ‘Damouchari, Hafen am Pilion’, artist’s stamp ESTIMATE €100 – €200 STARTING PRICE €100 Oskar Matulla was an Austrian painter, graphic artist and writer. After finishing school, the son of a master locksmith attended teacher training college and, from 1918 to 1920, the Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Applied Arts) under Franz Cizek. After a period as Cizek’s assistant, he worked as an art teacher in Bruck an der Leitha. In 1927, he returned to the Kunstgewerbeschule, this time under Erich Malina, to further his training in woodcut printing. In 1929, he became a member of the Zentralverband bildender Künstler Österreichs (Central Association of Austrian Artists), and, following the ‘Anschluss’ – Germany’s annexation of Austria in 1938 – he became a consultant for painting at the Reichskammer der Bildenden Künste (Reich Chamber of Fine Arts). From 1940, he was once again employed as an art teacher. After the war, he lived in Hengersdorf near Passau until 1947, where he became a member of the Donau-Wald-Gruppe. In 1947, he returned to Lower Austria, settling in Perchtoldsdorf, and gave up teaching. From 1948 to 1950, he studied at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt (Graphic Teaching and Research Institute), and in 1949 under Josef Dorowsky at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1955, he studied lithography at the Mourlot Studios in Paris. In 1950, Matulla became a member of the Vienna Secession; he was elected its vice-president in 1956. He also taught painting courses at adult education centres in Vienna. In 1964, he founded ‘Gruppe 64’, an association of Lower Austrian artists; this group remained active until 1972. He was also a member of the ‘Wiener Neustädter Künstlervereinigung’ (Wiener Neustadt Artists’ Association). His work was characterised by figurative forms reduced to simple shapes and enriched by small-scale Cubist elements. Wiener Neustadt named Oskar-Matulla-Gasse after the artist. Honours: 1962: Professor; 1963: Lower Austrian Cultural Prize for Fine Arts; 1969: Santhia Piemont International European Friendship Prize; 1969: Gustav Klimt Award from the Secession; 1970: 1st Radio Play Award of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia; 1981: Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art.
