Miklos Nemeth* (Budapest 1934 – 2012 Budapest) Set of 10 oil paintings oil on cardboard, approx. 65 x 80 cm to 70 x 100 cm partially dated on the reverse, estate stamp: Miklos Nemeth ESTIMATE €1,800 – €2,600 STARTING PRICE €1,800 Miklós Németh was born in Budapest in 1934 and is one of the most important Hungarian painters of the post-war period. He studied from 1950 to 1954 at Ödön Márffy’s Free Art School in Budapest, which was significantly influenced by the principles of the Académie Julian in Paris. Németh was influenced early on by well-known artists such as István Szönyi, Oszkár Glatz and János Kmetty, but soon developed his own expressive, colourful style. His subjects include nature, urban landscapes, working people, female nudes and portraits. He found his motifs in his family’s garden on the Buda side, with a view of the mountains, where he often painted outdoors. Németh described himself as the ‘painter of the volcano’, inspired by the colours of cooling lava and his inner visions. His impulsive working style is characterised by series of evolving images featuring intense colour compositions. From 1957 to 1980 he was active in various artists’ colonies in Hungary, exhibited internationally – including in Moscow, Dresden and Budapest – and was admitted to the National Association of Hungarian Artists in 1981. Miklós Németh died in Budapest in 2012. His work is characterised by passionate colour, dynamic brushwork and a pantheistic view of nature and people. Other artists and styles: Csontváry Kosztka Tivadar, István Nagy, Béla Gruber, Szinyei Merse Pál, Peter Robert Keil, József Derkovits, János Kmetty PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price comprises the highest bid plus the buyer’s premium, VAT and, where applicable, the artists’ resale rights fee and platform fee.
