Fred Nowak was an Austrian painter, graphic artist and stage designer associated with the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. Born in Vienna in 1919, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, from 1938 to 1943 under Albert Paris Gütersloh. From 1947 onwards, he took part in exhibitions organised by the Vienna Secession, worked as a stage designer for the Burgtheater and the Vienna State Opera, illustrated books and magazines, and was awarded the City of Vienna Prize for Fine Arts in 1962. Nowak created portraits, nudes, still lifes and fantastical scenes using a surreal visual language, delicate glazes, metallic highlights and dreamlike compositions, influenced by Viennese Modernism, Fantastic Realism and Baroque painting. His tempera paintings, oil paintings and watercolours possess a mystical atmosphere and precise detail.
