He gained widespread recognition—particularly for his expressive woodcuts and illustrations, as well as for his long tenure as a professor of art in Berlin. From 1922, he taught at the School of Arts and Crafts in Berlin-Charlottenburg, where he was appointed professor in 1931. During the Nazi era, some of his work was classified as ‘degenerate’ and destroyed, although he was permitted to continue exhibiting subject to certain restrictions. From 1945, he headed the class for mural and glass painting at the Berlin University of the Arts (Hochschule für Bildende Künste Berlin).
