Wolfgang Paalen was an influential Austrian-Mexican painter, sculptor and art philosopher. He is regarded as the driving force behind Viennese Modernism within the Parisian Surrealist movement. In 1939, Paalen emigrated to Mexico at the invitation of Frida Kahlo. In Mexico City, he founded the art magazine *Dyn* in 1942, in which he temporarily broke with Breton’s strict Surrealist dogmas and paved the way for the emerging American Abstract Expressionism.
