Florentina Pakosta is an Austrian painter and graphic artist working in the style of Feminist Realism, specialising in portraits, drawings and socially critical series. Born on 1 October 1933 in Vienna, she studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris in 1952, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague from 1952 to 1956 under Vladimír Silovský and Miroslav Holý (her studies were cut short due to political repression), at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1956 to 1960 under Josef Dobrowsky, undertook study trips to Venice, Amsterdam and Paris (École des Beaux-Arts, 1963), served as a board member of the Vienna Secession from 1971 to 1983 (the first female member), organised the exhibition “Secessionists” in 1978, received awards from the City of Vienna in 1974 and 1984, and was appointed professor in 1987. Pakosta created series of drawings such as ‘My Multiple Being’ (1960s, studies of facial expressions), ‘Paraphrases on Messerschmidt’s Character Heads’ (1970s, etchings), ‘Physiognomika’ (role portraits), ‘Contemporaries’ (men’s heads, stencil technique), ‘Crowds of People’, “Mass Still Lifes”, and, from 1988–1995 onwards, tricolour abstract paintings featuring hyperrealistic, satirical heads, a reduced colour palette and constructivist precision.
